Avast and AVG are the two most popular freebies out there.

I've used both, and would recommend either one. Personally, I've always been a big fan of Avast because of the interface. It's slick, easy to configure, and has a lot of options.

You have to register your email address to get 1 year free. You can opt not to have anything sent to your email account, but the reason for this is to get you to check out their website during registration (a small price to pay for a free product). After the year subscription is up, you just have to re-register again to get another year free. Again, they just want to make sure you are visiting their site to see updates/changes and consider buying the pro version...
