I am using both xp and vista on a single pc. currently i have quickheal antivirus on xp. should i install another antivirus for vista or i should leave it as it is? Previously i had installed avg antivirus free version in vista and while scanning it deleted a system file in xp which made me reinstall xp. So it is advisable to use an antivirus in two OS simultaneously or would they clash each other?

If you want real-time protection, you need anti-virus on both operating systems. If you just want to do a periodic scan, then you should be able to get by with an installation on one OS (provided your permissions are set correctly - i.e., when logged on to Vista, you can modify your XP system files, which sounds like it's the case already given your description.) As you saw, your Vista virus scan was able to find files on your XP partition, so if you only want to run scans periodically then that should be sufficient for you. For real-time protection, install on both operating systems. They will not clash since only one will be running at a time, depending on which OS you boot.
And AVG shouldn't target system files, unless you're not using an authentic copy of Windows.
