i know mac os x already has a firewall but my school requires that i have a antivirus/firewall program installed so which one is good. none of the free ones, i would like to buy it

I need an antivirus software to run locally for the computer and not the internet security antivirus software.
Few days back i got a virus into the system and the tools%26gt;Floder options has vanished from the windows explorer.

they all offer the same thing. i have vista on my laptop and my desktop and on my laptop i have norton and the desktop mcafee. i'd choose mcafee though since it is easer to use. they are also different prices but, they came free with my computers. my desktop is 3 months old and the laptop is one day.
Norton is the best but uses more resources. AVG is a reasonably good option.

This antivirus application has good virus detection rate but it uses more computer resources and so it makes your system bit slower.
Try nod32 antivirus, you can download this application from here http://www.eset.com/download/index.php, it is good as well as uses low system resouce and runs very smotthly. But it is a paid application.

I had Norton Anti virus but is not really good, because when I installed to my computer It did not scan all of the files and I had like 17 virus.
you may want to get McAfee that is the best If you have comcast High Speed Internet Its free you can call comcast or go to www.comcast.com and chat with a person that works at comcast and ask how you can get McAfee for free! But If you don't have comcast you can buy McAfee at Best Buy for $79.99 or less!
AVG is JUNK. I recommend active virus shield. It is the best and it is free.

Yep AVG I have had no probs with, however I do prefer Avast! anti virus a little bit more though. Both are excellent. Anything can beat Norton!!
The free version of Avg is pretty much average, it failed some critical tests. A ton of people like it but that does not mean anything to me. I do comparison analysis and it did not do well.

avast is pretty good to and so is adaware ... the registry cleaners u dont need imo and are asking for problems but thats my opinion ...

i have xp operating system and has net connection my system has virus '' win32/sality.p'' effected tried with free avg anti virus not catching. Scan with trendmicro online antivirus scanner choose the java option on the programme, and then scan with ewido online this is now owned by AVG. Both scans are very slow but worth it they allow you to get rid of any crud online after the scan has finished. I hope you get rid of it safe surfing.

win32/sality.p will disable any AV you download as well as change your firewall setting, I would try a free online scan this way win32/sality.p will not be able to disable the AV.

For the home user, what benefits are there (if any) of purchasing anti spyware and antivirus software? There are a number of brands of virus software available for free, but are they really any good?
The free version of AVG ( http://free.grisoft.com ) is quite decent for the home user.
If you think Avg is good enough for you, there is no need to purchase a license for another program.
But antivirus is the most important program of your computer, so you should really think about if it's worth saving a couple of bucks. Find one your comfortable with and stick with that, whether it's free or paid.
For anti spyware, there are so many freeware alternatives, so there is deffently no need to purchase that.
